letter to my family: December 23

Hey guys!

How are things going there? Things here are okay. Last night I met a few of Ditte’s friends who are also illustrators and were pretty cool. They both seemed to be pretty successful or at least know what they are doing. I hope to meet them again later. We also saw Life of Pi but the guy pronounced it Life of Pee when we gave him our tickets. That was the most enjoyable part of the movie. It was so bad that I got physically sick overnight and now I have a cold. Seriously though, if I wasn’t with people I had just met I would’ve walked out and stared at a brick wall for two hours instead.

Hopefully I’ll feel better by the end of today. I really did somehow get sick. Last night I felt so achy, felt like the glands in my throat were going through a cheese grater ever time I swallowed. I even wore long underwear because I couldn’t seem to maintain any sort of stable temperature.

Overall things are okay. The weather has been brutally gray the past few days and I recall past periods of my life where I’ve experienced this type of despair and detachment most likely due to the weather. Today’s Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is seasonal affective disorder. I e-mailed them telling them that is actually three words, or one term.

I purchased some gummy bears the other day. I keep ordering a cappuccino or latte at places when I go out and they keep being disgusting, bitter, watered-down. Each time I hope the new place will have some self-respect and make a quality drink. So far there is one place I’ve had a really good hot drink. The plain coffee at my favorite (and only real) coffee shop is good because they have a lot of African blends which are interesting. I know half of you don’t care about this shit, sorry.

Tomorrow is Christmas’ Eve, seems really strange because I’m totally disconnected from time. It’s definitely cold enough here but it doesn’t feel like Christmas. I’m excited to go to Ditte’s hometown, see it and also hang out with her family. Her siblings and parents are really nice. They also like photography and science. After that I’m really excited to go check out and explore Berlin.

Okay, I need to get moving. Love you guys, miss you!!
